General description of “2D Digital Sculpture”

Undoubtedly the art of sculpture is the branch of the visual arts which is specifically concerned with the creation of forms and surfaces in three dimensions.

Most features which in previous decades and centuries were considered necessary to the art of sculpture are not present in a first priority of modern sculpting. In last centuries sculpture was considered a representational art, but in recent years everything is changed.

Of course the principles of sculpturing are the same as traditional sculpture in the past, but the facilities, elements, materials and techniques are totally different specially in Digital world. Here we are going to visit the realistic 2D sculpting page that is made, and painted in Photoshop software.

  • Cubic Collection (Part 1)

This is a digital 2D sculpture. Surface, volume, light, space, color are the elements of the sculpting in visual art. The two main elements of sculpture are volume and Space. the parts and components of the statue penetrate and move through the space. Here in this Digital 2D canvas, we have vertical form such a cube which is painted on. First you have to imagine the lighting source in your mind and consider the reflections and adjust the shading scales in different part of your volume for stone material, after finishing the standing stony cube, then paint over it, use the modes and adjustments to fit altogether.

  • Cubic Collection (Part 2)

Here we have another 2D digital sculpture. In this artwork the base is a minimal textured cubic volume, a simple character holding an Umbrella but not as canopy, a symbolised chair has come out from the cube. This is a personal view of a 2D sculpture. In 3D softwares we just adjust the light sources and shadows by numbers and options, then we move on to the next steps in the software. but when you are waiting everything you have to visualize everything in advance, you have to start with primitive single volume as fundamental and then gradually make it complete.

In real life we have three aspects in actual physical sculptures, But keep in mind, over a two dimensional canvas you can only touch one view as a shot, so you should find how to control everything in your artwork. This technique may be suitable for any artist who intend to make a sculpture. By this method you as artist can view a very beautiful shot of your artwork with precise details. You can make different textures, different shapes and have many modifications on your artwork, then you can begin the physical freestanding three aspect sculpture. how you can draw your favorite subjects from A to Z and watch your fully detailed digital artwork before making your physical aspect of the sculpture? well, you are right. It needs so many tips and tricks.

  • Cubic Collection (Part 4)

This is not a three dimension or photograph picture. It is just a digital 2D art. Maybe it would be better to create the textures by yourself, You have to know a completed texture can create by different layers from different effects, for example a rusty texture may be included from different size and color of spots, stains, scratches, color sprays, etc… So you can mix the different layers of different effects to create your own texture the same shape as you wish. in this digital 2D sculpture you see how the layer is mixed and we have gained a rusty texture. this contemporary 2D sculpture is ready to build as physical sculpture.

Space between elements can be positive or negative, shallow or deep. Here the elements have moved inside the space by the vertical narrow forms on Geometric cube, in other side a contemporary human is sitting on a symbolic chair and looks at far away. All the textures, materials, forms, shapes and colors are painted on a 2D canvas in Photoshop. There are various digital facilities and completed tools for creating this kind of subjects in such of this software.

What is the art of digital? A real process on 2D canvas! A lady is standing and look at far away. As I have mentioned in different descriptions in this website, these artworks are done completely in photoshop (2D digital canvas from A to Z). In traditional visual art during centuries, the artists have utilised visual elements as : shape, size, color and texture. The conceptual elements are included: point, line, plane, volume. relational elements are direction, position, space, gravity and finally practical elements are: representation, Meaning, function. The good news is we can use these elements as well in digital art totally. The elements of sculpture are : surface, material, place, movement, edge, texture, color, scale, mass, volume, space, light, memory, centre of gravity. Well, all of these elements to promote your volume artwork. Keep in mind the various artistic components. So in this 2D artwork you see a modern sculpture of a human body on a geometry cube base. By default we have 4 light sources at least in our scene. The key light is in the right side, and we can say two reflections have somehow a symmetrical location. The hair/rim light is very helpful when we have dark background. This light shines from behind and may separate our subject from darkness of the back. The simplicity of the cube form can help us to focus more on the main subject. we have to try to create a beautiful forms to have harmony with each other properly. when we have limited forms, then we must avoid shapes of the same size, complicated or uncoordinated surfaces, inappropriate textures. The artist`s eye have to learn to identify the harmony in the nature of around us exactly, analyse the forms, shapes and colors, then choose the best ones to use in the artwork. Conor is very important as well. The red color in this piece can attract the attention of the viewers.

  • Cubic Collection (Part 7)

In this digital 2D artwork, there is an upright main figure which is pulling out the others. This work has used semantic and conceptual capabilities. The artistic process is a unique combination of vision, creativity, intuition, and collaboration balanced with craft, technique, accountability, discipline, and use of time and resources. The art process is a complex of multiple processes. Another important element in creating art is composition. These elements are considered as fundamental of visual arts. The fundamentals are generally universal across different mediums and styles. In a 2D canvas you have to find the best view to draw your artwork especially when you want to simulate the realistic and artistic volume in three dimensional form. Volume (three-dimensionality) can be simulated in a two-dimensional artwork (like a painting). As you know the elements of design are the things that artists and designers work with to create a design, or composition. A commonly used list of the main principles includes form, shape, line, color, value, space, texture and perspective. They all gather together to make a good piece of art. Learning them will help you become a wellrounded and versatile artist. The first priority in drawing is to use the elements and drawing in right way, and it needs to practice and practice over and over. you have to become a master of using color, form, line, shape, space, texture, and value, etc… you have to be able to control the balance, emphasis, harmony, movement, pattern, proportion, repetition, rhythm, unity, and variety in your artwork. It makes no difference whether you use digital or traditional physical tools, since the rules are same. and be noted that arranging elements in a creative and unique way that appeals to the senses or emotions is called art, which has defined in diverse of human activity.

  • Cubic Collection (Part 8)

A cube collection… two dimension digital process. why we have chosen the cube as base of the artworks in this collection? I mean a cubic collection. because the cube have several unique features like static, standing, resistant, etc… Cube is the most static form in visual art. And you know that form is one of the most important components, one of the most important elements in art is the form, In a cube geometry, the maximum dimensions you are able to see with eyes are three. to being able to have separated surfaces we ave to have different tones on the surfaces. Mostly you have different tone over the surfaces. An artist's eyes should be more sensitive and capable than others to differentiate between similar and close tones, tint, hue, color, or even shadow gradient and scales. He has to know which stains and spots are fit in his/her work and has to feel the most beautiful according to his own experienced aesthetic and even aesthetics based on scientific principles. Your eyes should move and look for and find the relation between the elements. You can make the movement of your work with color, another artist may create the visual events by texture. The joining of one form to another may be accomplished in a variety of ways. Every artist could have personal tricks. This feature make the world of art that every artist get a unique way to present his/her work, same as nature. The nature is the biggest source of inspiration for the artist, since nature create a new phenomena over and over in the world. we extract our idea from nature. so, return to form which are the visual tools that an artist uses to compose a work of art. A form is a shape in three dimensions, and, like shapes, can be geometric and organic or free-form.

  • Cubic Collection (Part 9)

A cube collecTexture is one of the important components to absorb positive feedback of viewers in an artistic piece of works. In this work I painted the patina from A to Z in digital canvas of Photoshop layer to layer. Texture in traditional painting ( physical painting) refers to the look and feel of the canvas. It is based on the paint, and its application, or the addition of materials such as ribbon, metal, wood, lace, leather and sand. Texture is defined as the physical composition of something, The texture stimulates two different senses: sight and touch an it is the physical feel of something, smooth, rough, fuzzy, slimy, and lots of textures something in between. What is the medium in digital art to create textures ? In digital softwares, you have to use (or simulate) tools and facilities or benefit the photos and pictures with different materials for your objects such as wood, stone, fabric etc. To simulate the real brush you have many adjustments inside the softwares like Photoshop. Photography is a medium through which artist's may create art. Likewise, a computer is just a medium or tool through which an artist can express his/her vision of line, form, color, composition and rhythm. An artist chooses the medium (oils, watercolors, or pixels) That he/she wants to use. the digital facilities are pen pressure, scattering, texture brush, transfer, dual brush, visual effect brushes, etc… For example to make an old stuff, we can say it kind of digital patina. Here you can see the statue base which as I said is painted only with brushes, and same technique for different materials for the boat and ropes which are somehow rusty and have artistic textures, You must first know the features of a that, it provides information in the spatial arrangement of colors or intensities in visual content of images. You paint an aged surface, a surface appearance of something grown beautiful especially with age or use the beautiful patina of this antique piece of workstation… two dimension digital process. why we have chosen the cube as base of the artworks in this collection? I mean a cubic collection. because the cube have several unique features like static, standing, resistant, etc… Cube is the most static form in visual art. In this piece of 2D digital art I have painted the rusty aged metal on digital canvas from the beginning to the end. I did not use and transfer any photo or outside picture to create this box. The art of digital is an artistic field that uses computer technology and facilities as part of creating and presentation process. Many people think the medium of the digital art or digital painting is just photography, but that's a mistaken belief. You are able to draw everything you wish. There are several subcategories of digital art regarding to visual art include digital painting, digital sketching, digital sculpting/3D, concept art, environment concept art, character art/ design, digital illustration, matte painting, etc… As you know digital painting is the process of painting on a tablet and creating artwork digitally on a computer. This is done through painting software that uses brushes much like traditional painting. But why I talk about digital painting ? because here we have digital 2D paint on canvas not three diminutional volume. I painted an imaginary realistic 2D sculpture in Photoshop. Sometimes I need to explain that since many people do not understand this at first glance and think this is a photograph or 3D artwork, specially the texture of box which is completely worked in photoshop. There are four types of texture in art: actual, simulated, abstract, and invented texture. Here I used the invented actual texture. Texture is defined as the physical composition of something, or the look and feel of fabric. but here we needed the rusty metal and I chose a oxidation over a long period and unique turquoise color for the figures forms and simulated the patina texture. You can easily copy and paste the textures from pictures but I prefer to make my own design and texture, because mostly you can not find the exact texture as you want to fit on your subjects, anyway you can improve your ability of painting digitally to create your unique artworks.

Here is a painted table which I mixed with one of my 2D sculptures. I liked to see the result for an artsy decoration. I tried to show a beautiful wooden table and install the suture on it. The statue should have old patina to adapt with the old wood texture.
